Question by batflyz2: Do People Still Call People With Down Syndrome “Mongoloids”?
I’m asking out of mere curiousity. is the term mongoloid meant to be a joke or is it serious?

Best answer:

Answer by Kathryn R
The OLD fashion term came from the fact that people with Downs syndrome had facial features that made them look like the Mongoloid race from Eastern Russia or what was than called the USSR. When they found the reason for the Syndrome they changed the name and now it known by that. Back before people knew better it was a serious classification for people with that type of Developmental delays.

Question by Question Queen ?: Why do people consider people with Down Syndrome “a Mongoloid”?
I thought Mongoloid was descendents from Mongolia or Asia. Why do people refer to people with Down Syndrome as a Mongoloid? Is it because they have Asian-looking eyes?

That was exactly why they used the term. It’s outdated now, as you probably know.

Question by Babe: What do you do when you see “little people” or disabled people or amputees?
(If you see them in the mall/store/street)

I always have this tendency to quickly look away if I see them. [I don't want them to think I'm staring.]
But then, I don’t want to abruptly turn away because I don’t want them to think I’m ignoring them or “putting my nose up” to them or anything…

[If it were anyone else, I'd probably just casually smile as I walk by.]

Gah, what is one to do? What is the etiquette on the matter?

Question by make: Are non-disabled people “good”?
i see that normal people treat each other like nice standard humans beings, they turn out to be the “nicest” “friendly” people on earth.they do normal things, such as skiing, running, sports, hiking, and all normal things that they do and they are smart, funny, talented, and they have good personality, but unfortunatley, they are mean to the mentally disabled. They stare, they make fun of them and even say some remarks behind thier backs and thier face. They are extremely INGORANT, RUDE, MEAN and NASTY towards people with mental disabilities. How can these people (normal people) considered to be “nice” friendly” people?

I’m confused as to how this relates to dancing, but yeah, I have to agree with you.

I am deaf, I don’t call myself disabled, but people see me that way. I really get to see the other side of people sometimes. People who seem so nice actually turn out to be the most cruel.

I think it has to do with majority/minority, and lack of education about disability. Since disabled people are not the majority in America, they are often treated incorrectly. Also, since most people don’t know what to do with a disabled person, they end up doing the wrong thing.
