Nothing about Us without Us is the motto of this years International Day of the Disabled People. Proclaimed by the General Assembly in October 1992, this day aims to raise awareness on disabled peoples rights at national and international levels. On the 3rd December 1982, the UN General Assembly decided on the World Programme of Action for Disabled People. The United Nations committed itself and its members to promote the full participation of disabled people in social life and development as well as prevention and rehabilitation measures. Twelve years on, many problems are still unresolved. Disabled people are not yet fully considered within international development issues. They are still excluded from society in many countries of the world. Even where effective disability legislation is in place, the implementation lacks ideas and is hindered by negative attitudes towards disabled people.

Source: DAMN 2025 press advisory Join a group of disabled people and supporters on March 26th to demand status for Abdel-Kader Belaouni and demand the Canadian government end its ableist and racist immigration practices and policies. Kader is a blind refugee claimant who has been forced to live in sanctuary for over two years in Montreal. He faces deportation to unstable Algeria where his safety will be jeopardized and where there are no services for blind people. He is facing deportation because of Canada’s discriminatory immigration policy towards the disabled, not to mention people of colour and the poor. “If you are disabled, it is very likely that you will never become a Canadian citizen because we are considered to be drains on the system. This is offensive, discriminatory and it has to stop,” says Loree Erickson, DAMN member and disabled immigrant who will likely not be able to stay in Canada permanently because of ableist policies. Though we are an important part of every community, Canada actively works to keep disabled people out. The only way this will ever change is if disabled people and our supporters join together to fight for justice for everyone.

Supreme Court: “willful blindness” to patent infringement not OK
In a lopsided 8-1 ruling , the Supreme Court on Tuesday held that “willful blindness” to the existence of a patent will not save you from charges of inducing other companies to violate the patent at issue. The case has drawn interest from the software industry because a lower court decision had chosen a laxer standard, “deliberate indifference,” that a coalition of software companies warned …
