Question by systemglitch: How do we know that ADD & ADHD are real?
Please forgive me if I offend with you with this question. I am not trying to dismiss those with ADD/ADHD as being frauds who use the illness as an excuse to do poorly in school, but I am just wondering: Since there is no bacteria, virus, or other organism that is the culprit behind this “disorder”, can it be really called a disease?
Kind of like syndromes. A “syndrome” is basically a select collection of symptoms that often come together hand-in-hand. Tourette syndrome, for example, is where one involuntarily has vocal outbursts (constant cursing) and involuntary motor twitching. This is kind of what ADD is, a syndrome, or a set of symptoms that often come together.
…The truth is, I believe if I were to be tested for ADD, I would most likely turn out positive. I just spent six hours reading a book for class, and got about 30 pages done because I couldn’t focus and kept daydreaming. Also, when people talk to me, I often begin to zone out mid-conversation and I think it’s obvious to them, as they start slowing down as if they realize my attention span is running out. So I’m not being bias when I ask, could ADD just be a sort of genetic thing? Like how some people are naturally skinny or obese, could or attention span be based on DNA just as much as our metabolism? What is the difference really between a person’s brain who has ADD, and a normal one?
In truth, I think what doctors would call “ADD” in me is really lack of self-discipline, willpower, mental focus (partly due to insomnia), and laziness on my part. I’m not going to lie.
Again, not to discredit anyone with ADD. Sorry if I sound like an a**hole.

i think you’re confusing mental disorders (or as you say, diseases) with physical diseases that can be brought on by a germ (such as tetanus or hepatitis, for example). the majority of psychological disorders are brought on by either by physical damage, trauma and as you mentioned genetics, amongst other things. i wouldn’t beable to disclose the difference between a normal brain and one with ADD since i’m not a neurologist. however, i do know ADD isn’t just someones inability to control themselves.. there are underlying issues which i haven’t researched and don’t really plan to, lol.
