Scientists have known for some time that Down Syndrome, the most common chromosomal abnormality, is caused by an additional chromosome #21. However, new fetal stem cell research is demonstrating that it is not only the presence of this additional chromosome, but also what the genes are missing, that may impede the development of a Down Syndrome brain. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, “minds-on” experience. Question by Magick: Do you think Seth MacFarlane went too far with the “Down’s Syndrome” joke?
Simple question, hopefully with some simple and respectful answers. Leaving Sarah Palin out of it, do you think the recent episode (Valentine’s day to be exact) of Family Guy went too far with its making fun of a Down’s Syndrome girl?

I think it was funny. Not because I’m intolerant, but many people are, so it appeals to a wide audience. I liked it…

Question by Derek R the East-Coast Élitist: Is Palin mainly upset over Family Guy because it’s making her feel bad about not aborting her “Down’s baby”?
By the way, by saying “Down’s baby”, I’m only using her own words.

http://www.vanityfair.com/online/wolcott/2009/09/who-knew-sarah-palin-was.html

“After Tripp was born, Sarah would pay more attention to our son than she would to her own baby, Trig. Sarah has a weird sense of humor. When she came home from work, Bristol and I would be holding Trig and Tripp. Sarah would call Trig–who was born with Down syndrome–”my little Down’s baby.” But I couldn’t believe it when she would come over and sometimes say, playing around, “No, I don’t want the retarded baby–I want the other one,” and pick up Tripp. That was just her–even her kids were used to it.”

Question by Fred: Should everybody in the USA be treated exactly Equal, like those with “Downs Syndrome” ETC.?
There is a difference in “people”, but why not “Affirmative Action” for all, blind people should be airline pilots, deaf people should be 9-1-1 operators, paraplegics should be firefighters, midgets should be in the NBA, and on and on. Why did they stop with just blacks and women getting special treatment? This is not a “rant” and I will be attacked for grammar errors, that is all they got a “Kill the Messenger” thing. And cry-baby to Yahoo…”Fred said the truth, he made me feel bad”…..XOXOXOXOXOXO Fred
Equal opportunity, yes. Equal results, no way should special treatment should play a part.

i think that there should be equal opportunity for all, but think of it, how intellectual, intellgent, or athletic all the others are? my brother has downs syndrome and although i do wish that when he ghets older he can do well for himself but i wouldnt want him to do so while putting others in harms way (pilot for example)

‘Kids Like These’ – DOWN’S SYNDROME What is it? Down’s syndrome (also called Down syndrome) is a genetic condition known as trisomy, where a person inherits an extra copy of one chromosome. People with the syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21 rather than two. This additional genetic material changes the finely tuned balance of the body and results in characteristic physical and intellectual features. It’s not known why this abnormality occurs, but it affects around one in 1000 babies born in the UK – about 750 babies a year – and is the most common cause of learning disability. Different types There are three types of Down’s syndrome: Regular trisomy 21 – all the cells have an extra chromosome 21. Around 94 per cent of people with Down’s syndrome have this type. Translocation – the extra chromosome 21 material is attached to another chromosome and one of the parents may carry the translocated chromosome without any signs of the condition themselves. This accounts for around 4 per cent of cases. Mosaic – only some of the cells have an extra chromosome 21. Around two per cent of people with Down’s have this type, which tends to result in milder features. What are the symptoms? People with Down’s syndrome tend to look different they typically have a flat facial profile and eyes that slant upwards. Other facial features include smaller ears, a flat back of the head and protruding tongue. People with the syndrome also tend to be shorter than average with poor muscle

Question by OrangeCat: What can Downs people do at 21 besides “dribble” and “play clappa cake”?
This British lady on Youtube seems to know everything about people she calls “mentally retarded”.

She goes and writes on this YouTube video about a baby with Downs Syndrome, “but will it still be cute when she is 21 and still dribbling and playing clappa cake.”

She says I base my info about people with Downs soley on YouTube videos.

But I happen to know of at least one 23 year old women with Downs who can play T-ball.

(No, Julie, I’m not trying to be mean, just outraged)

Song: Era – Hymne Down syndrome, Down’s syndrome, or trisomy 21 is a chromosomal disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who described the syndrome in 1866. The disorder was identified as a chromosome 21 trisomy by Jérôme Lejeune in 1959. The condition is characterized by a combination of major and minor differences in structure. Often Down syndrome is associated with some impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth as well as facial appearance. Down syndrome can be identified during pregnancy or at birth. Question by Lucy: Parents of children with Down’s syndrome!!! I need major help!!!?
Hey,
I have a biology project to do and I need your help.
For the project we have egg babies and each of our babies has a disease/syndrome/disorder/ETC. anyway, mine has Down’s syndrome. We have to make baby books, journals, keep the egg baby alive (he’s still kickin’) and lastly make a presentation on our—in my case, syndrome. In parent to parent style.
So far I think I’m doing a good job.
But I have a question that google can’t seem to answer. :C
Do Down’s syndrome people have to take medication?
Which are the best? I would like to recommend to my “parent audience” a good medication.
If you could please tell me the name of the medication and what it does.
Also if you wouldn’t mind, pretend I just had a baby that was diagnosed with Down’s syndrome. What would you be sure to tell me?
Thank you soooo much!!!

and, i really don’t hurt anyone’s feelings but I want a name for my presentation is “Down With the Syndrome” offensive?

please be honest, and if it is i’m really sorry i didn’t mean for it to be offensive.

Best answer:

Answer by TW
I think sticking with just down syndrome for your presentation name will keep anyone from being offended as the title you have chose could be considered offensive to some.

I don’t have a child with down syndrome, but I do have a sister and have done many presentations on down syndrome. There is not a specific medicine for Down Syndrome. It is a disorder not a disease. Some children with Downs may have other conditions that require medication, such as a heart condition. There is some new studies that suggest that ginkgo and prozac combined can help improve memory skills in Downs patients. I would suggest doing a little more research on Down Syndrome and be better informed. That is what a parent would do with a child that is diagnosed. I have included some websites that will help you with your research.
