Signing Illustrated (Revised Edition): The Complete Learning Guide Reviews

Being a Deaf American Sign Language instructor, I spend much of my time searching for resources regarding ASL vocabulary, syntax, and non-manual communications. “Signing Illustrated” is the perfect book to start you out. This book includes 1500 signs, very clearly illustrated with memory aids, as well as help tp practice fingerspelling. Like any ASL book you’ll come across, there are some regional differences in the signs, but they’re few and far between.
The vocabulary is listed in categories instead of alphabetical order. This means that you can learn all of your feeling words or all of your action words without having to sift through the book and find each one. I love that about this!Along with this book, you can purchase a board game called, “Sign It!” which uses this text as its reference. There are also a couple of books that are the exact same pictures and descriptions, exact same author, but different format. No matter what your reason is to learn ASL, this is a wonderful book to get you started. HIGHLY recommended from a deafie! :v)

This book is absolutely the BEST in its class! As a Deafie myself, I would tell anyone without hesitation that this is the book to get if you want an easy and readable access to sign langauge. A definite MUST- READ!

Barron’s 500 Flash Cards of American Sign Language
Full-color photos on flash cards present close-ups of a model demonstrating 500 American Sign Language (ASL) signs. The meanings, brief descriptions of hand and arm motions, and related words are listed on the reverse side of each card. Correct formations of hand shapes and facial expressions are clearly shown to eliminate any possible confusion regarding intended word meanings. Where appropriate, photos include directional arrows that show hand or arm movements. Each flash card has a hole in one corner to accommodate a metal ring included with the boxed set. Users can select and fit any combination of cards they please to combine relevant words and create statements, or to review signs that they have difficulty identifying. Here is an ideal method for recognizing and memorizing American Sign Language vocabulary–a fine learning resource for all who plan to work with deaf people.

Barron’s 500 Flash Cards of American Sign Language Reviews

I have been studying ASL for a while now and have various books and tools to help me practice. These cards are some of the most extensive I have seen so far. Though they obviously can’t contain everything that you will need, they do have the most practical words for everyday usage in a very clear format on each card.
The box contains a binder ring and each card is whole punched so that you can make you own “study sets” if you like. They are alphabetized by color and are numbered so that they can be placed back in order if you choose to store them that way for quick reference after using them.
About the size of two playing cards, and roughly the consistency of playing cards, they are big enough to see clearly but small enough to carry along with you.
There are arrows showing movement direction and they are easy to understand but I would recommend that you already be a bit familiar with the real-life movements (maybe by having seen a video version first) in order to get the most out of this deck, since it is difficult to imagine precise movements/placement by looking at a two-dimensional card.
These cards are a great addition to any practice tools you might have for learning and recalling many signs, so I highly recommend them.

The sign language flash cards are great for teaching onself signing. I even use then in a preschool classroom as I teach the children. Having a visual on one side and the word plus instruction on the other. I would encourage anyone wanting to learn sigh language to get this set of cards it also easy to carry around. The card come hole punched and with a ring.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Conversational Sign Language Illustrated Reviews

I wish this book had existed when I was first learning sign language! It is possibly the best beginner book out there. It is packed full of useful information, and goes far beyond just picking up sign language, delving into the Deaf world. This book is worth every penny, even if you already know quite a few words.
For newbies: although the author says what you’re learning isn’t ASL (but rather “Contact Sign”) all of the signs are ASL (not Signed Exact English), what she means is that the way they’re used in the book is simpler and more like pidgin (only I believe she went a step above that).
The words are ASL, and you will get a better feel of the iconic nature of most signs than with other books (such as making a distinction between just the word “Garage” and a garage that is underground, or a garage that is a few floors up. This is something I hadn’t seen in books before, only in video and lifeprint, com.
Speaking of video, it does come with a DVD, which is *wonderful*. Trying to learn ASL from pictures will not work. It’s too easy to misread directions (although the illustrations (photos) in this book are clear and well done!).
Don’t let the awfulness of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to *Learning* Sign Language” keep you from getting “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to *Conversational* Sign Language”. This book is completely different!

As a professor and instructor of ASL and Deaf Culture for over 35 years, this outstanding book mirrors so much of my lecture materials — and a whole lot more. It has things in it that never crossed my mind to explain to my students. Indeed, it’s not by oversight on my part but by intellectual stimulation that Carole and Dawn opted for. I finally found a fabulous textbook for my classes.
There are so many insipid ASL books in the market that either stimulate or encourage anyone to learn because they lacked instructiveness or assimilability. This Idiot won’t make a moron out of any willing reader who wants to learn ASL and Deaf culture. Carole and Dawn clearly leads the way to learn and understand how ASL and Deaf culture work. This Idiot even has that wonderful teacher-student aura as one reads and tries to sign. The flow of thought and meaning is so even and clear.
Thanks, Carole and Dawn!
Congratulations!!

My First 100 Words (Sign Language) Reviews

Book is colorful and easy to understand with pictures, words, and arrow diagrams to aid in forming correct signs. Includes a short introduction to ASL very helpful for 1st timers. The layout is a two page spread for each category with side panals on each page showing the signs. Content is broken down into small chunks. For example the “Feelings” spread has a picture of children in a classroom involved in various activities with a variety of expressions. Each child is labeled with the “feeling” and the signs are shown along the side panels (4 signs in each panel; 8 per category).

This book was bought as a teaching aid. It is good with someone that knows the signs and can demonstrate; On the other hand if kids try to sign from this book they might become confused. The pic are cute and lively colors, you really cannot see the shape of the hands.
The book arrived very quickly and it great shape, like new. Quality seller.
