deaf people dancing. It’s nice

SOURCE: abclocal.go.com By Karen Meyer February 8, 2009 (WLS) — The state of Illinois institutionalizes more people with developmental disabilities than any other state in the country. In fact, Illinois is ranked last in supporting community living for this population. Plans are being proposed to redirect state resources for people with developmental disabilities so they can be part of the community. Illinois has 15000 people with developmental disabilities on the waiting list for support services. The Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities has a plan that will help more people like Jessica Martin. Martin, 22, is lucky. She is living in her own apartment with a roommate. Something she has always dreamed of. “I want to live in this kind of situation and I want to get a degree in social work, work in human services which I’m working at Oakton,” Martin said. Although Jessica took transition classes in high school, her mom Joan said it took a lot of work to make this happen. “Jessica just turned 22. Leaving the special education system and entering the entitlement system, which we’re finding more and more about that is so grim,” said Jessica’s mom. Due to Jessica’s cerebral palsy she needs help from a personal assistant. “Jessica and her roommate use their PA hours from home services program to pay for their direct support professionals, and the hardship for them is that the pay for these workers is .85 an hour, and .85 an hour pays for someone to cook, clean

Question by Ashley:): The Movie “The Temptations”?
Your Question
The movie “The Temptations”?
So i was watching the movie “the temptations” i love that movie so much but i never got the part when blue (the one in the wheelchair)” went into the kitchen to get the ribs and they he yelled and odis and the mother went in and was like no no! then they showed blue in a casket what happened? i really want to know? anyone know?

Best answer:

Answer by Ignorant people and I dont mix:)
In the movie, that is not the way Blue died in real life. Blue had rheumatoid Arthritis. He received so many cortisone shots to relieve his pain that left his immune open to infections and health problems. He developed dibetes and Necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating bacteria). He lapsed into a coma and died, in a hospital, after having a brain seizure. I know this because I love the movie Temptations very much and I was wondering the same question.

I’m Not Broken: You Don’T Need Arms To Be Happy

From Chet McDoniel (author): I’m proud to announce that my new book, “I’m Not Broken: You Don’t Need Arms to Be Happy” is finally out! This book has been tons of fun to write as I was able share some of my life’s lessons on how to truly be happy. I learned at a very young age that my happiness could not depend on what I had or did not have, so I’ve spent my life making sure that my happiness comes from within. You see, I was born without arms, and have had to learn how to choose to be happy.

Question by : Man and woman “fall” from the balcony of cruise ship?
HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) — More than four hours after they fell from a cruise ship into the Gulf of Mexico, two vacationers were pulled from the water about 150 miles off the Galveston, Texas, coast early Sunday, according to the cruise line and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman apparently fell from a passenger’s cabin balcony on the Grand Princess about eight hours after the cruise ship left the Galveston port, said Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises.

Coast guard officials “found the man nude in the water but he was then clothed and is now on the ship’s deck in a wheelchair,” Shaw said.

Huh…accident? you be the judge?

Some drunken idiot fell overboard last week – and they found him too! I wonder if the cruise lines should simply offer people the opportunity to be trhown overboard. Strap them to a life jacket, tie a rope around them, chuck them in the drink and drag them for a mile.

Question by Wild Sage: Why do people call non-disabled people “normal?”?
The term normal is inaccurate, because it implies that people with disabilities aren’t normal or that they are less than human. They are not “broken” and they do not need to become “normalized.” What is normal for one person may not be normal for another. There really is no such thing as normal.

If you are referring to people without disabiltites, please use the term “typical.”
I am not overly sensitive. In fact, I am not the first to say this. I work at a non-profit agency that advocates for children with disabilities, and the preferred term for people without disabilities is “typical.”
I also have ADD and I find it offensive to be told that I’m not normal.
I have a postcard hanging over my desk that says “The only normal people are the ones you don’t know very well!” It’s so true- almost everyone has some kind of issue or problem to deal with, even if they don’t have any diagnosible disabilities.
lfh1213, people with disabilities are in fact atypical, because they are in the minority. Typical just means the majority. However, normal means not only the majority, but also the correct or preferred state. This is why “abnormal” is offensive but “atypical” isn’t.

I have Asperger’s syndrome. I call people who are non-disabled “neurotypical.”
