Illinois School for the Visually Impaired serves as a statewide resource offering students with visual impairments quality educational services which will enable them to become personally productive and self-sufficient citizens. ISVI provides educational programming for children from birth to 21 years of age. ISVI’s strong academic programming emphasizes independence and vocational skills, instruction in Braille, daily living skills, orientation and mobility training, and assistive technology. ISVI students enjoy a variety of extracurricular and dormitory activities, including track, cheerleading, swimming, wrestling, goalball, forensics, yearbook, student council, and choir.

China has an estimated 12 million people suffering from visual impairments, of which 6 million are blind. This ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital program concentrated on the training and skills transfer to address some of the leading causes of blindness with a large focus on pediatric diseases. Dr. Edward O’Malley, pediatric ophthalmologist from the Henry Ford Medical Center, joined ORBIS to facilitate a week-long pediatric strabismus clinic, working with the local eye doctors in the treatment and case management of this eye disease. Jane Bernstein, a parent and author of Loving Rachel and Rachel in the World – books which look at life with her daughter who has developmental disabilities was the keynote speaker at the 26th New England Regional Seminar for Children with Visual Impairments and Their Families (birth-7 years of age). This webcast is a tape of her keynote presentation.

On average, 18 students live on-site in a dorm while they are given instruction in areas including braille, cooking, independent travel, computer access, self-health care and fitness. On the north edge of Albany, the Orientation Center for the Blind is a free residential rehabilitation program for people with severe visual impairments. Since it opened in the 1950s, the center has been consecrate to helping people develop self-governing living and pre-vocational skills. Applicants apply for residence through the state. Length of training is based on students’ needs and averages six to nine months. The center is run by the California Department of Rehabilitation. December 2010
