During the Flying Eye Hospital program in Dalian, China, ORBIS staff joined our partner hospital, Hu Eye Hospital, for an outreach program in the outskirts of the city. The objective of this Flying Eye Hospital program, and the outreach, is to support the advocacy of pediatric eye care. To this end, the ORBIS staff screened 400 kindergarten children on Saturday and provided a lecture series (complete with Q&A) for the parents of those children. These outreach programs within the school system are becoming more frequent through our partner hospital and with the intervention of ORBIS programs. China has the second most blind people in the world (behind India) with more than 6 million people blind and more than 12 million with visual impairments. Pediatric eye diseases is on the rise and our objective is to help our partners establish a dedicated pediatric eye care center to serve this northwestern section of the country, which they are currently without.
