Question by Nevada: What is a good diet for a recently “disabled” teen?
Hey everyone, recently I have become unable to do sports because of an injury, which has practically disabled for who knows how long. What I’m getting that is that the sports[football, baseball, track] have always kept me in shape, but now since I can’t do anything I want to be able to stay healthy. What would be a good full time diet for me to help me slimmed back down and healthy?
Just to explain more, its a hip injury. Hard to walk or even move it much

your diet should stay the same -a completely balanced meal with junk food in moderation. don’t make any changes.

Question by weeashe: Disabled boyfriend feeling a bit down?
Ok so my boyfriend is in a wheelchair, we are both 16. He suffered a spinal cord injury back in december and since then has been doing really well. He’s been really upbeat and positive on the whole, but every now and then he just falls apart a bit and hits a real low point for a week or so and then picks himself back up and get on with it. The trouble is that he’s been like this for around a month. His confidence has taken a massive hit. I think it’s all just sinking in now, the permanent nature of his injury. He’s a C5 complete and he needs help with most things. It depends a lot on the type of day he’s having also, he has a lot of spasms sometimes worse than others so some days he needs fed, others he can feed himself. Another thing is that he’s so embarrassed, he has trouble accepting his stepdad and hates being dressed, washed etc by him. He came back to school in June, I was so proud of him, he had missed a lot and he had to deal with kids staring and worse. He just let it all roll off his back, before his accident he was a talented athlete and the school made him the guys athletics captain. I’m the athletics captain for the girls. While he’s not an active team member, he’s great at coaching the younger ones, they all look up to him so much. I think a part of it all comes down to the fact that he’s slowly becoming more insecure, it’s actually kinda heartbreaking to watch.

I think I totally made things so much worse though. You see Im staying with him and his family just now, my home situation got out of control and they’ve been great to me. The thing is I know I can’t stay there forever so I’m in the application process of joining the army. The toughest thing being that before his injury he wanted to be a soldier. I then broke up with him, told him I’d be there but we shouldn’t be so close. He was so upset, and I see now that what I did was wrong, but I did it because I care about him. My brother came home from Afghanistan and he’s got PTSD, he’s only 20 and he can at times be very difficult to be around, so I didn’t want Liam to go through that if I came back from war a totally changed person. I don’t know what to suggest to him, the obvious choices being wheelchair sport, but he’d rather not as it would remind him he couldn’t do “normal sport”. He’s also noticing changes in his body, he got so thin in hospital but slowly his appetite came back and now he’s gaining weight. The thing he didn’t expect so much was the way he gained the weight. It’s all at his tummy, and for the first time in his life he has a double chin. He says it makes him look “more disabled” but I think that he looks healthier, different yes. But healthier, he doesn’t look ill.

Usually these down moods don’t last but if there’s anyone who’s been through something similar, or just has some ideas on how to cheer him up a bit they would be greatly appreciated.

My husband broke his L2 is was an incomplete break he was not supposed to walk. Luckily he has been able to walk. We are all so grateful for it. He still has a lot of the same issues that embarrass him so much like lack of bm control. pressure sores (on his feet rather) that take months to heal. I married him knowing he had these issues, he is lucky to have me here to help him out. Although I know if I was not his mother would help him. Even so I believe the best thing you can do for anyone is to help them to be self sufficient and independent.
Give him hope and support him.

Question by tchristi07: Is the following scenario disability fraud?
I know a person who receives disability income from health problems associated with a large weight loss. (close to 300 lbs.) But… he works at convienance store 8-2, 5days a wk, gets paid under the table, is a high school coach (pd. with paycheck,) and then is a sports journalist for a local paper, (pd. by another co-worker under the table, his name appears in the paper.) He says, “once disabled, always disabled,” but he can’t make, but so much money on disability, or else he’ll have to pay taxes on it… Also he pretty much lets his son sit home, flunk school and braggs that “it’s another 300 mo. income for him,” as long as his just turned 18 old stays in school. Is that the truth on disability? He’s out to the wee hours of the morning covering games and running himself ragged, it doesn’t seem like he’s disabled to me.

I’m just curious, he’s one of those people always putting me (& others) down in order to elicit sympathy from others about poor him, disabled and working 3 jobs…

Answer by Kat D
If he’s not following the rules set up by the Social Security Administration for receiving benefits, then, YES, it is fraud.
