My male cat turned 8 this month. For the last 6 1/2 yrs he has battled with an illness that has baffled veterinarians. I am 110% sure that it is a very rare illness called feline hyperesthesia syndrome “rolling skin syndrome”. He has been self mutilating himself daily, randomly lays in his litter box for hours, seems to be annoyed by lots of things (mainly his own body and tail), and has recently started to pee in his food and water dish. I am at the end of my rope after years of failed vet visits and countless hundreds of dollars down the drain in conventional treatments.
Not under a vets supervision – since the 6+ different vets I have taken him to can’t figure out whats wrong with him – I am going to start giving him anxitane today and give it the recommended 2 months of treatment. If that doesn’t work I am going to bump it up to prozac (fluoxetine). After that, even though it pains me, the only option I have left is euthanization.
Sorry for the long description but I felt it necessary, my question is how many of you have seen success with these drugs for symptoms like self mutilation or peeing out of the litter box?
No, but they were prescribed by a vet. They are the exact dosage he needs and anxitane is a common drug that has nearly no side effects which is why I am starting him on them. If they don’t work and I use the prozac I will be getting the vet’s referral before purchasing.
It is tough and I thank you for your answer. I have not tried a specialist due to money shortages from spending all of it at the regular vet. I got the meds free from a friend who got them for his pet but didn’t use them. I am fairly confident that these meds will not hurt him. Its a 5mg tablet given twice daily. He is 12 pounds. I will also be swtiching his food to a zero grain dry food diet.

Did your vet give you antidepressants for your cat? You should not give these things without the vet’s advising you to do so as it could cause death. This sounds like a horrible situation and I applaud your efforts, but if your cat is suffering and there is no hope, you should help him and let him go.

Some of this sounds neurological in nature. Have you considered taking him to a university that has a vet program? There are many specialists on staff and maybe a neurologist could help your cat or they could help you find a proper treatment to improve his life. I love my kitties and all of my animals, but sometimes you just have to let them go if it is their time. Living a miserable life if not a life worth living. Prayers for you and kitty.

Question by Primus Fireburner: Why do I always get angry by this one family member?
I’ve always been ticked off by my younger sister, and every time I see her, or even just hear her, I start to get angry. I don’t know why; it makes me want to hurt her, and I always say I want her to die. When I do something wrong, she laughs at me, I hit her, she cries like a baby, and then other people stick up for her.

Anyone that supports her, like my godmother, makes me angry, too. Maybe it’s because my godmother is a Christian and I’m an Atheist, and her “goody”-ness is frustrating me because she’s always the “good guy”, and I hurt her while she was holding me to my bed to get me to calm down. I mean, it was a pen, and I hurt her a few times with it (only once to make her bleed), but I truly thought it was self defense (in that moment, at least). I don’t really feel guilty about it as most people do.

Their words of “how they love me, care for me” don’t really have an impact on how I view them. Why can’t I understand it?

They threatened today to put me in a mental institution because of how I act and because I threaten people (which I do because I’m influenced by media and comedy), but the only real threats I even remotely mean are for the younger sister (though I cannot enact any of them on her on the slim chance that God may be real and I’d be going to heaven.)

Every time I post something on Facebook, however negative it is, my godmother steps in and tells me it’s wrong. I’ve blocked her since then.

I really don’t want to keep going like this; I need some honest answers. I’m the middle child, and I have almost absolutely NO problems with my older sister, but I sincerely hate my younger sister, and I don’t know how to make it stop. I don’t believe it’s the whole “middle child syndrome” because I’ve looked up the symptoms, and none of them really apply to me.

Hmm. I can’t tell you I know exactly what’s causing the ill feeling towards your younger sister, but I had very much the same problem growing up, and I still do.

I’m a 19 year old female with a twin sister who is also female and has the same birthday as me.
Ever since I knew how to think for myself, I have had strong distaste for her.

I’ve never wanted to have the same clothing style, never wear the same brand of make-up, never watch the same movies or TV shows, never sleep in the same room, never have the same friends, and if she happens to listen to a song on the radio that I also like, I will abruptly stop listening to that song altogether by that band, just because she also enjoys it.

I have tried to confide in people before, but they always say the same cliche answer like ‘maybe you’re jealous of her, maybe she did something to you when you were young that you got mad at her for and never got over, maybe you want more attention, maybe you want to be better than her.’

Honestly though, I don’t think any of those answers quite nail the problem right on the head.

I used to be really nasty to her, hitting her when nobody was around, threatening her, calling her names and telling other people all about her personal life.. but since I have grown older I have learned to keep my hateful feeling towards her kept under the carpet, so to speak.

I still get a really agitated tone in my voice when she comes up and talks to me, and she has noticed it for years. She always asks me why I sound like I want to rip her head off, and I honestly never have an answer. In fact, I have gotten so used to responding to her in that tone that I always forget I’m even doing it.

Perhaps we are just too different and that contributes to why I don’t like her, but I think it goes beyond that. Throughout your life when you move out and have a lot of time to settle down and think about your childhood, the answer might come to light as to why you felt so negatively towards her. I don’t think anybody who doesn’t know you and your personality personally can really give you the right answer, but I wish you luck in the future with coping with your feelings. It’s a good thing to start early on in life, because I’m sure you will meet more annoying people later on, and you won’t be able to harm them unless you want to risk the chance of going to jail.
