Question by Soosh: How can I stop hating my dog?
Dogs have been my whole world for a long time. I got my first dog, a lab, all to myself (not a family dog) when I was about 10 and was so happy. She was the best friend I’d ever had. I considered myself a dog person since then. 10 years ago I had 2 labs (outside, farm dogs), and my mom decided I could get a small, indoor puppy. I picked out a shih tzu. He was happy, and sweet like a puppy should be. But as he grew, he started to change. I’m pretty sure he came from a puppy mill, and we really didn’t know about proper socialization then. So he started getting “small dog syndrome”. As he became an adult, he got paranoid, nervous and snippy. He was fine with the 2 labs, but hated every other dog. Would snap and growl at strangers if they tried to make friends with him. But he was nice to everyone with our bloodline, and he was my good buddy, my puppy, my companion. I loved him a lot. Just last year back at home, both of the labs died of old age. The shih tzu and I live in an apartment in another state with a cat. I noticed a shift in our relationship then; I was devastated with the loss of both my sweet old labs, and this dogs quirks were less endearing then they used to be. Our relationship really started to break in December, when my boyfriend and I got our very first ferret. Despite hating dogs and people, he’s usually good with small animals. He didn’t seem interested in ferret right away. The ferret gained more out of cage time, and wanted to try and play with the dog. He would cling to my feet and if the ferret got near, he would nip at him. This just started getting him yelled at, as I was not going to allow him to bite at a tiny ferret. Eventually, he just started standing up and avoiding the ferret completely. He began to be more irritating to me; constantly following me, staring at me creepily, always trying to sit on my feet, not listening to me when I told him to go away, etc. Eventually we happened upon a second ferret. Things have steadily decreased. Now when he gets breakfast and dinner, he just stares at me, and stares at the bowl. I have to either go away or yell at him to eat to get him to eat some of the food. I’ve tried to play with his favorite squeaky toys with him, but if a ferret gets near it, he won’t even bother, just shuts down. I feel like the only time I ever spend with him anymore is yelling, pushing, or ignoring. I do hug him before going to bed, but he can’t even sleep in the bedroom anymore like he used to because of allergy reasons. It seems like his very presence just irritates me. I feel horrible because I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even like me anymore because I am so angry with him constantly. I discussed his constant anxiety/depression with his vet yesterday, but he didn’t really have any good tips, just that I could probably see a behaviorist. Its almost like I don’t even like dogs anymore, which is devastating for me. I feel like we really need to get some help on this before there is irreparable damage between us, or even worse, before my anger goes too far. (I would never expect it would, but I also didn’t expect to not like my dog anymore…) Does anyone have any way to resolve this issue?

(If you are going to answer and tell me how horrible I am, please don’t. I’m already aware. If you’re going to answer and tell me to give him away, don’t, because I won’t. You don’t give up on family just because you’ve hit a rough patch. He’s my dog, and it’s my responsibility to heal this.)
To the people who say “kill it”, grow up.

For couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure undertaken to screen the embryos for a host of genetic diseases and disorders to ensure the delivery of a healthy baby. PGD helps physicians to identify some genetic defects within the embryo, prior to implantation, before the pregnancy is established. The couple can then decide whether or not they want to continue with the pregnancy. The procedure was first conducted in 1988 and since then this technology is increasingly being used in fertility clinics in the United States.

PGD is normally recommended for couples where one or both of the parents are a known carrier of a genetic disease such as hemophilia. The procedure involves the removal of one or two cells from an embryo which are then screened for genetic abnormalities. PGD identifies the embryos with chromosome abnormalities, thereby avoiding their transfer during an in vitro fertilization procedure. The analysis helps to detect certain inherited or chromosomal diseases such as Down syndrome, Thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia A, Tay-Sachs disease, and Turner syndrome among others, prior to implantation.

Most fertility clinics offer PGD in select cases such as* Women over the age of 35 who have had miscarriages or failed attempts at becoming pregnant through IVF* Women who have repeated pregnancy loss due to genetic disorders or who already have one child with a genetic problem* Any couple who have been unable to become pregnant through multiple IVF cycles* Couples who wish to identify a tissue match for a sick sibling who can be cured with transplanted cells

For couples who are at risk of passing on serious inheritable genetic diseases to their offspring, a diagnosis before embarking on a pregnancy is preferable to medically invasive, emotionally demanding prenatal diagnostic techniques. However couples with genetic disorders should receive adequate counseling about the risks of misdiagnosis and the possibility of no diagnosis before going in for PGD.

www.ebfertility.com/, California, offers a wide range of infertility treatmentalong with expert medical counseling to couples facing difficulty in conceiving. Under the guidance of Dr. Ellen U. Snowden, Medical Director and Reproductive Endocrinologist, medical staff at East Bay provides dedicated treatment for infertility and reproductive endocrine issues.

At the center, PGD is offered as an option to couples who are at high risk of passing on a genetic disease to their children. The Center’s IVF experience and access to advanced genetic testing and counseling holds the promise of increasing the probability of a successful pregnancy outcome from an in vitro fertilization procedure and reducing the incidence of genetic disease. The use of this advanced genetic testing procedure allows only normal embryos to be transferred back into the uterus, providing a much better chance of achieving a full-term pregnancy with chromosomally healthy embryos.
