The top athletes with visual impairments in the country gathered at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, June 15-17 to compete for a national championship. Brockport played host to the 2011 National Goalball Championship Tournament. Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by athletes who are blind or visually impaired. The object of the game, which was developed after World War II as a way to keep blinded veterans physically active, is to roll a basketball-sized ball—containing bells—across an opponent’s goal line. The United States Association of Blind Athletes event featured 80 athletes on 14 teams that emerged from regional tournaments that were held across the country.
