Question by Hayden: Sign Language question?
I have heard many people say “I only know one sign language” and they put up the middle finger. I have always wondered if the middle finger is actually sign language for anything or if it’s just a universal gesture.

Universal gesture. But in England they flip people off by using the peace sign reversed. So I suppose it depends on your country of origin.
I believe it means different things in different parts of the world. Also, there are different types of sign language, like British Sign Language is a bit different than American Sign Language, from what I understand.
It is actually a universal gesture. But since one would sign it and not speak it, that constitiutes as sign language…so technically it is both!
I have been told many by hearing people said that all the time!
The middle finger is not actually Sign Language but mostly are in America gesture but I can not speak for other country because I don’t live there.
If you want to say f–k you?
Then put f in sign then put k in sign like this….
Unfortunately, it has become some what, a universal gesture, having a negative connotation. However, in Australia and Middle Eastern countries, giving some thumbs up is as offensive as the middle finger to them. It all depends on what country you live and dialect you are around.
Well, obviously it’s a gesture understood by everyone in the US and in other countries. but it is also part of ASL. If a deaf person wants to sign f-you to someone, that is the sign they use. If they want to use the f-word in a sexual sense, you would use the sign for intercourse. So, yes, the middle finger is a sign for something in ASL and it is the sign for “f-you” just as hearing people know it.
