Question by Sophia’s Mommy: Do you think that people that are over weight deserve to have a handicapped sticker?
In the state of Michigan, being overweight is called a “disability” and anyone over weight may get a handicapped sticker or a plate. Usually I wouldn’t care however, when major holidays come alone, sports events etc…Most of the Handicapped parking spaces are taken up by those who are over weight…I understand that the people who have a real disability should be given a sticker..But during Holidays and Big Events in my area, I am waiting just like everyone else for a parking place, and then the “disabled” take a handicapped parking place, I get annoyed. What do you think?
I know that this is Marriage and Divorce, however most people in this category, will give me a serious answer.

Unless they have a thyroid problem, I do not think they (over-weight people) should have one. There are too many people with larger disabilities (immobile, elderly, mentally challenged, etc.) that need those parking spaces.

EDIT:: Whoever is giving thumbs down must be one of those (morbidly obese) people.

i don’t think it should be. it’s good for them to have to walk farther.

  2. glassesguru says:

I hate to say this, but as a thin person with a disability who chooses not to utlize one of these stickers, I find this insulting. That is enabling someone at it’s finest.

  3. Britney M says:

That is kind of strange. The overweight ones need the extra exercise. Giving them a handicapped sticker is like preventing them from burning calories. I’m not being rude either I’m being serious.

  4. Who are you? says:

I guess it would depend if there was something else wrong with them that maybe caused them to be overweight or possibly caused by being overweight.

    Just for being overweight, no.

  5. psydude256 says:

I think the overweight people, to the point of obesity, the ones that have general problems walking and actually need special accommodations, are deserving of them. People who are diabetic oftentimes gain massive amounts of weight and become seriously obese, but it’s really the only way to keep alive for them.

But some people who are just too lazy to go to the gym and think they deserve it, and are not actually clinically obese, do not deserve to take those spots. Maybe the walk from the back of the parking lot might help that weight loss.

  6. bored at work says:

no because they are overweight by choice. i feel the same about health insurance.

This drives me crazy too. I guess if they are “morbidly obese” it is one thing, but I can’t believe all of the people that have handicapped passes right now! I live in Michigan too, and the little flags that go in the windows are the worst, because people use their grandma’s/grandpa’s/aunt’s/mother’s (whoever’s) just to go to the store/event by themselves. And, they have no shame in doing so.

  8. Mare027 says:

In most cases, obesity is a choice — I’d be friggin mad if my quad friend had to give up a space for someone who chooses to eat themselves sick!!

  9. 1hotmamaG says:

I think that it is ridiculous unless there is a serious medical condition that is causing their obesity other then Hand to Mouth disease. Tax payers shouldn’t have to pay for their disability checks and the like because people choose to over eat. I had a neighbor growing up that was on disability because she was overweight. She drove the car to the mailbox. It was a very very short driveway. Even her husband told us that there was nothing wrong with her other then she wouldn’t stop eating so much.

  10. Lisa b says:

I’m with you on this one. If they parked a bit further away they’d get some exercise and might lose some weight. That’s what wrong with everybody, nobody wants to take responsibility for themselves anymore!

  11. Greg0rz says:

I only consider a disability to be something that’s NOT brought upon oneself. For instance : a victim of a stroke may suffer brain damage and be unable to move some parts of their body, I justify this as a suitable reason for them to get a pass. Now, someone who smokes 2 packs a day, and can’t muster enough lung capacity to reach the door without a lift from a closer parking spot, well, that’s just a shame that they decided to start up the stupid habit of smoking and ruined it for themself.

It’s the same as obesity. People should have the WILLPOWER to be able to resist fast food, fatty food, and everything else that is horrible for their body. It’s common sense, if you’re going to eat like that, you’re going to get fat. It’s not the fault of the public that they were stupid about their decisions, and they should live with it.

Diabetes is uncurable, brain damage is uncurable, an amputated leg is uncurable, obesity: only requires a few miles on a treadmill each day.
It just comes down to laziness and the people who use it to their advantage.
They should live with the choices that they’ve made and work at LOSING weight by walking a bit farther to get to McDonalds to get a Quadruple Pounder BigMac instead of getting the handicap parking lot right beside the door.
NOT TO MENTION all the kids that will wonder why all the overweight people are being rewarded for being overly large.

    Hell no!

  13. Dindins says:

flipping heck no they shouldnt unless theres a serious chance theyll drop dead from a heart attack by walking a extra 5ometres which is a good excuse to lose weight. no its just another way the modern world is excepting obeise people an making there life easier which is stupid in my opinion and im also sick of all those selfish people that take handicapped or elderly peoples parking spaces oh and also do people even realise that when using a mothers with pram parking space youve at least got to have either a young child or a pram with you a booster seat in the back of the car just doesnt cut it :l

  14. angel baby says:

i think if they are really over weight then yes it would be bad if the had to walk far and had a heart attack so my answer is yes

  15. SammyGates2005 says:

no, unless a doctor advises so, especially for obese people.

  16. Jim C. says:

Let the overweight take the spot and when you go by them remind them to EXCERSICE……… Or at leaste try.

  17. Babycat says:

Are you kidding? Unless they have a medical problem, they should definitely not get a handicapped sticker. That’s just them being lazy. It’s not right.

  18. killmethenkissme says:

I feel that they need the exercise, so why give them the first parking spots where it’s closest to the entrance? I also don’t like when someone needs those motorized carts in the grocery store, like someone elderly or with a broken leg, and they are all taken by the morbidly obese who just speed their way to the candy aisle or somewhere else they don’t need to be. Obesity doesn’t just happen, it wasn’t an accident…it was a personal health choice that a person made (most of the time) and I don’t think special treatment is needed just so you can park closer to a restaurant and continue the cycle of living a unhealthy life.

  19. AlenaT says:

then alcoholism shoud be disability as well…because if you look at it they are very similar…obese people have an addiction to the food and alcoholic people have an addiction to the alcohol…and let’s say that obesity is not even a disease…it’s a lifestyle …I hope I do not have to remind aeveryone the concentration camps …and that is the fact !!!

  20. SpicyStuff86 says:

I am overweight myself but I do not think it would be right for me to have a disability sticker. That is just like saying that people who smoke or have a drinking problem should have a disability sticker. They are all the same thing, addictions. I have no problem either with people being on disability who truly are in able to act normally in their daily lives due to the fact of illness or injury, but for a choice that you have in life, I do not think so. It is going to get to the point where extremely lazy people gain weight just to receive disability benefits. It is truly an awful thought. I also understand that obesity can cause real health problems, but health problems that can be fixed.

  21. Queen of Wands says:

I saw a huge truck with Michigan license plates parked in front of a store in my area (I live in the South) and taking up the disabled parking place…meanwhile a very old local man had to park way far away from the door and hobble to the store across the parking lot…I wanted to beat the Hell out of the fat couple who belonged to that truck…does that tell you how I feel about it? That poor old man…life isn’t hard enough for him. he has to have his rightful parking space taken by lard asses from Michigan…

  22. louise b says:

Just cuz they’re over weight is NOT a good reason for them to get a handicapped sticker! There r too many ppl now who take handicapped prkg. when they don’t have a handicap & that pisses me off! Where I live, u have to have a Dr. certify that u r handicapped b4 u get a sticker. That means u have a chronic condition, heart, lungs sever back probs., any condition that makes it very difficult for u to walk very far without stopping to take a breath. It’s kinda hard to explain in writting..There r even pregnant women who think they deserve to use facilities that r for ppl who have REAL disabilities! Being overweight is NOT a disability unless there’s an underlying condition. Ur state needs to rethink what they consider a disability.

  23. Sue says:

hell no that is so wrong there are thing that you can pass off but that is not one of them.an cool your fat ass down you have no rigth to get annoyed you should take it as a time to exercise.

  24. jamsterette@sbcglobal.net says:

If a person is seriously disabled then they deserve one. That is definitely up to their doctor in OH to get one. So be upset with their doctor for allowing them to have one. Like someone else said, let them walk off a few calories.

  25. uranus2mars says:

unless they are grossly obese, they don’t deserve one…most people ARE overweight…maybe just a pound or two, but overweight
it isn’t right to have the parking places for those that are overweight versus those that are in wheelchairs with no legs…come on…

  26. Beth B says:

First off, I do not live in Michigan – I live in Tennessee.

Second, I am an overweight person but I’m not on disability, nor do I intend to apply for disability because I’m overweight. I believe that my own personal reason for being overweight is because I am addicted to food, just as an alcoholic or drug addict is addicted to alcohol or drugs. Plain and simple. I struggle with this addiction every day. But, it’s not an excuse so that I can be lazy, by any means — I’d be too embarassed to even apply for disability.

Finally, those of you that DO live in Michigan – how about writing to your lawmakers and demand to know WHY this law makes it so easy for just “anyone” to get a disability sticker/license plate. YOU have the power to change the laws in your state — make some noise if it bothers you that much!!! It’s your right and DUTY to intercede on behalf of your lawmakers to tell them what you think.

  27. mytea2001 says:

Yes ,and it should be placed over their mouth .

  28. Mrs. Duncan says:

I was overweight, I weighed 210 lbs at my heaviest and I do not believe that being overweight is a disability. From personal experience, I know it is laziness. I have educated myself on how to live a healthy lifestyle and am now at 135 lbs and am still trying to lose. I have found anyone can lose weight. I have since gotten my mom to lose weight. She was 400 lbs and is now 240, but is still going strong. No surgery either, people just need to get educated and live healthy.

My point, overweight people do not need disability stickers, in fact that is the last thing they need. It would actually help if they parked as far away from the store as possible so they would get more exercise.

  29. trinity7183 says:

Some of these answers are just sick. Anyone who says obesity is a ‘choice’ has never dealt with the problem or been close to someone dealing with the problem. When my father died he was morbidly obese, over 400 lbs. He didn’t just gain weight as a hobby or to get a parking space. He had diabetes II and was clinically depressed. Now before anyone says “oh, I don’t mean the people who whateverwhatever, I mean everybody ELSE!” please keep in mind that you don’t know the medical history of every, no, ANY overweight person you see. You don’t know if they’re just eating because they’re married to someone with a squish fetish or because they have a thyroid issue or because they have that problem with their brain where they can’t tell when they’re full. You don’t know. The fact is that being overweight causes huge strain on your joints, muscles, and heart. It shortens your lifespan.

And maybe (going back to the original question) the reason why you can’t find a parking space while they’re using their handicapped stickers is because those big events you’re talking about happen to be some of the only times they can bring themselves to go outside their homes. The ill wishes and anger of people like you are the reasons why you don’t see them about any other time.

  30. Say-- says:

    Uh NO that is all.

  31. Liz22 says:

no, but some obese people should get a handicapped sticker. A lot of obese people have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure. Some with serious health issues related to their weight should get a handicapped sticker. My dad just had a 2nd bypass surgery.
