Question by Joey’s Back: Am I the only Liberal sick and tired of being told to “work for a living.”?
I work VERY hard, at a low-paying job that is mostly physical labor. I have several “disabilities”, including a torn rotator cuff with a bicep that is only connected in one place, and pins in my ankle and a metal plate in my leg.
I don’t “qualify” for any sort of assistance from the government, but wouldn’t take it if I did. I believe in taking care of myself and my family!
Everytime I turn around, there is some writer on Y!A telling me that “Liberals don’t believe in work.” or that I am trying to give their hard-earned money away. Look at it from my point of view for once:
A) I have worked hard all my life (I am 60), and paid my taxes and Social Security like every other legal worker! If I or any member of my family ever needs to take a “hand up” from the government, it is only MY money that they’re getting anyway!!
B) I have never said that people should sit on their hands and wait for a government hand-out. But, I also believe that everyone COULD need a helping
hand at some point. Would I begrudge them that? NO!
C) If you don’t know me, how can you make assumptions about what I feel is right or wrong?
D) Much of MY tax money goes into things I don’t believe in or wish to support–like war for just one instance!
Who else is tired of being told to “Get a job” or “Leave if you don’t like it”???
I certainly AM a Liberal!! I question EVERYTHING and would never accept the status quo!!

Its not the Liberal sheep that are to blame….It is the Liberal Leaders. Has any real Liberal ( not follower) ever really worked?? No!!! They tax you more, take away more of your money and freedoms and stuff it in their own pockets

You don`t sound “liberal” to me.
Many of the “Daddy’s Money” bunch believe that if you weren’t born with it, you must be on welfare or something…These are the ones that don’t know the true meaning of “work”…
No because I do work hard for a living to keep a roof over my head with the help of my husband. I just take it as misinformation from the malinformed.
Besides, I wish that the people who like to label others would make up their mind what I am. I’m either a lib or a con. That gets a bit frustrating and confusing at times.

I want to add also that I grew up with very liberal parents who made me do chores and if I wanted something i had to work to earn it. I’ve been working since I was 11 years old delivering papers and babysitting to pay for any extras that I wanted; a TV, voice lessons, chocolate milk at lunch instead of regular milk. My parents barely gave me anything that I wanted if I didn’t earn it myself.
And while I do hold some liberal views I also hold very conservative views. This can be confusing for people who only believe in the polarity, black and white. I have always held to the belief that the truth is in the middle.
I was one of them ‘Libertarian, no hand outs period’ type of person, until I got sick in the Late 70′s and could no longer work. Fortunately, I am a veteran, and I was able to ‘get a hand-out ‘ from a government program, called the Veterans Administration, which our illustrious AWOL President, wants to eventually abolish. I have been a “commie-pinko-lib-Democrat’ every since.
time will be the judge, when they get to be your age and take a few more losses. they will get the picture. bad things happen to good people. nothing bad has happened to them yet. god bless them for that, but it wont last. it never does.
untill then keep in mind, that YA is mostly teenagers and misfits.
It’s wrong that people say that . But understand that Liberalism attracts the youngest of our countrymen and also the ‘hand-out’ people . The ‘entitlement’ people . On the other hand, Conservatism SHUNS people with notions like that .
each ot his own.. if you dont want to work.. thne dont.. there is no shame in it these days since the system has been so badly skewed and manipulated ot serve the neo cons.. work at will.. not out of a feeling of duty.. thats just the propaganda they want you to believe..
I so agree with you. It’s so nasty. I guess they believe if they repeat the lie, it’ll become the truth.
I’m college educated, middle class, have never taken government assistance(and like you, would be ashamed to do so)but I’ve a few times been close enough to the edge to know sometimes people need a little help) but that doesn’t seem to matter.

It seems some here don’t understand the thought process of “liberal” government help. If you give someone a hand UP, they become tax paying citizens, and the government doesn’t have to help them anymore. Most people don’t love getting assistance. It’s win-win! And, the US has had a history where we’ve been ashamed of children starving in America.
I agree with you, I am a Liberal and me and my husband both work , pay taxes and don’t receive welfare (not that I think welfare is a bad thing for those who don’t abuse it). We pay a ridiculous amount for health insurance (it takes a huge bite out of our paychecks) and yet the wealthy get all the tax breaks. I get tired of people on YA assuming Liberals don’t work, and like you said, even if you did get a “hand up”, your taxes have been paying for it!
It is an argument from conservatives that don’t hold water, as a truck driver I spent many days working 20 hours. I have dug graves as a youngster, worked many low paying jobs that required physical labor. I don’t think that they have worked a day in most of their lives like I have worked my whole life. But when they run out of an argument that is ol’ reliable.

I am a liberal with a successful career who has worked my way up the corporate ladder, but I help anyone who is in need- and I never resent it. I, too, would rather use my taxes to feed poor children than to fight an unjustified war. And, I teach my children to help those less fortunate-not kick them when they are down.
My regrets to you for having worked for so many years so hard at a job that never paid much.
By definition crazy is– Repeating the same task over and over again expecting the out come to alter.
I do agree that we should have some say in where our tax $ $ $ $ are being spent. I like the idea that a form can be sent in every couple of years when we file our taxes. The form could have top 100 places you want you tax $ $ spent on. You get to chose in order of importance and those funds get your money. That way people who believe that having the best military in the world to protect us can support it. the people who believe that we need more social programs can be assured that someone is being taken cared of.
No, you are not the only one who feels that way, and you shouldn’t be made to feel that you have to justify your very existence that way. If you really want to know what a truly enlightened, spiritually evolved society is supposed to be like, read all of Neale Donald Walsch’s books…especially the first three…Conversations with God 1, 2, and 3!!!! Also, I also have a problem with my rotator cuff, and I take MSM, and glucosamin, and they really help. Your problem may be different than mine, because I think mine is cartilage related, but it is worth a try.!!!!!!
I’m with you man, I own my own business but to hear a Neo Con tell it I’m a welfare subsisting lowlife, and the amazing thing is if you look at some of the accusers accounts it seems like they are on here constantly which makes the question where do they work that they can screw around on here 24/7?
