Question by Tom T: Is diabetes considered a disability in Canada?
Hello, I am working on my OSAP application for school, and I was wondering if diabetes is considered a life long disability in Canada, or by the government. I mean, when my blood sugar is low, I HAVE to stop what I am doing, and get some sugar. Or, if I am having high blood sugars, I pee often, and drink a lot of water etc. And with both of those comes things like comas, and blurred vision, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. This all has a huge impact on my studies during the school year. Anyways, the question is “is diabetes a physical disability?” Thanks!

Contact the school/schools you are applying to or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Most of the schools will likely consider type 1 a disability, and many will consider type 2 diabetes a “minor disability” and make reasonable accomondations, however, you aren’t going to get a free ride on the “don’t feel like it” bus, since diabetes (both types) is generally considered controlable. So you won’t get an extra week to turn in a paper unless you’re hospitalized, but you might be allowed to bring a water or juice bottle to class. Your teachers will be informed of your condition (which is good because someone needs to know what to do if you’re becoming hypo).

please try to get better control of your diabetes. damage occurs when the blood sugars are out of range and not corrected. losing one’s eyesight, kidney dialysis, heart disease and amputations are most defintely disabling and you should do everything in your power to avoid them. diabetes in itself is not totally disabling but it certainly does have an impact on ones’ life. it just takes a lot more effort and yes it is annoying at times, but you don’t really have a choice. have you discussed getting an insulin pump with your endocrinologist? that could give you the ability to have better control and maintain your health longer..
