Why wouldn’t you? Can’t they fix some spinal defects while the baby is sill in the womb?

Well everyone has there opinions, I got the test done, and it is nice to find out yes or no. Because if your baby will have it they can give you some treatment that will help and you can be better prepare. good luck

No I didn’t. There is nothing you can do to fix it so why would you need to know unless abortion is an option. For me abortion isn’t an option and I will take my baby however he comes out.

The test you are talking about has an extremely high false positive rate as well. Another reason I turned it down.

I did not because i knew that i would not do anything if it came back positive. So i didn’t want to worry the whole rest of my pregnancy. It is your choice, i chose not to.

That test has over a 60% false positive rate. Even if it was an actual positive, theres nothing that can be done (short of shelling out half a million dollars for surgery that in most cases kills the unborn, and can ruin your chance of having more kids) so what difference does it make to me?

I didnt have them done. Iam not over 30 and none of those run in my family. I love my children, and stressing for 3 weeks and suffering myself and the baby through an amnio for further diagnosis isnt something iam interested in.

I know ONE person who ever got a negative on that test. All the other people I know got false positives. Not a fun three weeks.

I had the amnio test done with my first pregnancy. Blood work came back irregural. I was sent two hours away to a specialist to have the amnio done. My boyfriend at the time freaked out when they said there was a 1% chance I could misscarry after the test. He would not allow me to do it. So, we went home and I finally talked him into it. It is much better for everyone in the situation if you have it done. Once the test results came back okay; my mind was at ease and I could enjoy the rest of my pregnancy. If there is something wrong it is much better that everyone knows and is prepared. The dr will monitor you more closely and make sure you have a safe delivery. It is a little uncomfortable having the test done but it is not painful. It is very quick and in the long run it will benefit everyone.

No I didn’t. There was no point. All it would have done was forewarned me. I could wait to see if my child was different. As it turned out I got an Autistic child that no test could predict. And I love him to bits.

i never got the test done with my son because at the end of the day thats your blood and regardless of whether its well or not u will feel that automatic love with your child the moment you set eyes on him or her.

    It depends on the test.

Alpha Fetal Protein has a high false positive – I didn’t take it.

Bunn test (it has another name now) is a AFP and an ultrasound together – this wasn’t available when I was pregnant. My friend was in the initial testing, and I was in the second when it was under development. This gives you a probability of a chromosonal abnormality, which you can compare to your age-based risk and see if you want to do further testing.

Amnio – carries a small risk of miscarriage – I didn’t do it.

Ultrasound – non-invasive, and can tell you about correctable things – cleft palate, cord around the neck, etc. In my case though, it falsely showed a choroid plexus cyst which caused me huge worries until it was disproved. I still think that this is a good test to take (and a little bit fun!)

I wasn’t planning on having the tests. I would’ve kept my son no matter what, if anything, was wrong with him.

I ended up getting the tests anyway, because I had an amnio at 20 weeks (had a total of 3 during pregnancy) for a blood compatibility problem between me and my son that had to be monitored. I still knew that no matter what the tests said, I would let nature take its course. Our biggest fear was the problems that the blood issue could’ve caused.

All turned out well though…he’s now healthy, strong and will be a year old March 13.

Personally I am one of those people that want to know. The people that have posted before me are correct in saying the tests have a high false positive rate but the test are only indicitive of possibility. They don’t claim to be 100%. The reason I had them done was because I am a firm believer in strength in numbers and if anything were wrong I would want to know where to find support once the baby was born. If you are not like me, which is perfectly fine, then dont have them. there really is nothing that can be done. Abortion was also not an option for me. It’s kind of like finding out the sex of your baby, it just depends on how much you want to know ahead of time. Good luck and remeber stress is not good for pregnancy, descide what you want and don’t second guess yourself, it really is a personal decision.

Which test do you mean? First there’s alphafetal protein (spelling?) – that’s just a regular blood test. Then there’s amniocentesis where a needle is put into your stomach. I just had the 1st test done (haven’t gotten the results back yet) & even if the results show problems I won’t get the amniocentisis. First of all, it can cause miscarriage & even if there’s something wrong with the baby, I’ll still love it just the same- It will be born how God intended it.
