The OLD fashion term came from the fact that people with Downs syndrome had facial features that made them look like the Mongoloid race from Eastern Russia or what was than called the USSR. When they found the reason for the Syndrome they changed the name and now it known by that. Back before people knew better it was a serious classification for people with that type of Developmental delays.

unfortunately yes some ignorant, uneducated people do use this terminology for people with downs syndrome. It was a term used seriously years ago but not anymore. Its now a very insulting word and i absolutely hate it.
No, it is no longer called “Mongoloid.” The correct and more neutral, less demeaning diagnosis is “Down’s Syndrome.”
The term mongoloid was never meant to be a joke. It was a reference to the facial features of a person with this disease. There is a physical resemblance between those with this disease and people of the “Mongoloid race” of East Asia.
Apparently even when the term is now used to refer to this “race” many Asians find the term offensive.
